Help alleviate a headache with this homemade balm.

Headaches plague people of all ages. Allergies, stress and eating the wrong combination of foods are some of the most common factors behind the onset of headaches. When the pain begins, it is not unusual for most people to alleviate the discomfort by taking oral over-the-counter remedies. However, analgesics are not without side effects, which include gastrointestinal distress. Pain medications can also interfere with various prescription medications.

There are many ways to get rid of the pain without having to resort to pain pills. Consider using an aromatic balm instead. The scent created by aromatic balms offer a variety of benefits when applied topically. Balms are easy to make and require only a selection of various common ingredients. When a headache strikes, reach for a tin of homemade balm instead of potentially harmful pain pills.

The scent of lavender is known to reduce levels of the hormone cortisol in the blood. Eucalyptus, peppermint and shea nut oils clear respiratory congestion. Shea nut oil and grapeseed oils also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Soothing Headache Balm



  1. Combine the shea nut oil, grapeseed oil and beeswax in a double boiler.
  2. Melt the ingredients over a medium heat setting.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and stir until well blended.
  4. Add the eucalyptus, lavender and peppermint oils and blend well.
  5. Pour the balm into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Allow the contents to cool and solidify.
  6. Massage the balm on the temples and forehead as well as at the base of the neck.
  7. Relax and breathe deeply.
